Rema’s “Calm Down” has set a new milestones in the music industry.
The 24-year-old Nigerian artist Rema, has become the most-streamed Afrobeats track in the US, according to Chart Data on X, and is now the first Afrobeats song to surpass one billion on-demand streams in the country.
Released in February 2022 as part of Rema’s debut album “Rave and Roses,” “Calm Down” received an additional boost when Rema collaborated with US pop star Selena Gomez for a remix a few months later. This remix reached a billion plays on Spotify and garnered nearly 894 million views on YouTube, making it the most-watched music video by a Nigerian artist.
The song made history by remaining on the Billboard Hot 100 for a year, peaking at number three, making it the highest-charting song with an Afrobeats artist as the lead. Rema, born Divine Ikubor, has now joined the ranks of Afrobeats legends like Burna Boy, Wizkid, and Davido. He describes his distinctive style as “Afrorave,” and these achievements underscore his significant impact on the global music scene.
