Mutale Nalumango Dismisses Crash and Assassination Claims

Zambia’s Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, has dismissed as false and malicious the circulating social media claims alleging that she was involved in a helicopter accident in Eastern Province. The claims, which quickly gained traction online, also suggested that the Vice President was the target of an alleged assassination attempt — assertions that have now been firmly refuted by her office.
Official Response from Government
In an official statement issued by her Press Aide, Njenje Chizu, the Office of the Vice President clarified that Nalumango is safe and actively carrying out her national duties. According to the statement, the Vice President has been on a tour of duty, assessing the impact of floods affecting communities in:
- Northern Province
- Eastern Province
- Luapula Province
Chizu emphasized that at no point was the Vice President involved in any accident or security incident.
False Allegations and Misinformation
The statement strongly condemned the spread of misinformation, describing the claims as deliberately misleading and harmful.
It further alleged that some of the false reports may have been propagated by individuals linked to opposition groups, with the intention of creating an impression of tension between Hakainde Hichilema and Vice President Nalumango.
Claims of “Arranged Plane Clash” Rejected
Among the most alarming allegations were claims suggesting that the Vice President had narrowly escaped an “arranged plane clash” intended to harm her.
However, Chizu dismissed these claims as reckless propaganda.
“At no point has there been any attempt on her life, nor has any aircraft in her entourage experienced or come close to an accident,” he stated.
Call for Action Against Fake News
The Office of the Vice President has since called on law enforcement agencies to take action against individuals responsible for spreading false information online. Authorities have warned that such misinformation poses a threat to national peace, security, and public trust.
Growing Concern Over Online Rumors
This incident highlights the increasing challenge of misinformation in the digital era, where unverified claims can spread rapidly and cause unnecessary panic among citizens.
It also underscores the importance of relying on credible sources when sharing sensitive information involving public officials. Despite the viral rumors, official communication confirms that Vice President Mutale Nalumango is safe and continues to carry out her duties across the country. The situation serves as a reminder of the dangers of misinformation and the need for responsible use of social media.
